Historically, the Bears have been one of the most successful teams in Colorado’s 3A football division. The Bears have been West Slope League champs in each of the last four seasons, sharing the title with Palisade in 2013. The Bears have posted a 44-7 record over the course of those four seasons. Rifle also enjoyed a stretch of 13 consecutive playoff appearances, a state championship, a state runner-up, and four league championships between 1995 and 2007.
In 2014 the Bears qualified for their 4th state championship appearance in 11 seasons, losing to the Pueblo East Eagles in Pueblo.
In 2012 the Bears rode a 13-0 record to the state finals where they were upset by Silver Creek. Despite finishing fourth in the Western Slope Conference in 2004 and 2005, the Bears appeared in two consecutive 3A state championship games, and brought home the state title in 2004. The Bears also won the state title in 1973 and 1961.
In all, the Bears have 31 Colorado state playoff appearances and have played in 59 total playoff games with a 30-28-1 all time playoff record in the single elimination tournament. The Bears are an impressive 15-7 in the playoffs since 2004.
